Newsletter 2010

2009 was a great year in Exochori. Here are some highlights to turn your thoughts to warmth and the peaceful pace of village life.

After winter rains the spring orchids were tremendous. In some places there were carpets of different kinds, more numerous than ever. These wonderful displays continued for many weeks.

In May an impressive (and surprising) mountain bike race swept through the village.

Starting in Kardamili, 130 competitors wound up the mountain tracks and into the Vassiliki Forest at 1000m. Then they plummetting back to sea level finishing dramatically in the Viros Gorge.

The 47km circuit was steep and gruelling, with some sections where competitors had to run carrying their bikes! Amazingly the winning rider got round in just over 2 hours.

This event, the Outsports Bike & Run Cup, was organised by the outdoor shop 2407 in Kardamili and looks set to become an annual event. It truly is a spectacle to watch, or if you are feeling fit then sign up to take part. Date for this year to be confirmed.

On a more domestic scale, we have continued to work in the gardens. This year the garden produced more organic vegetables and fruit than before. Also the landscaping of the seating areas is becoming more established.

We have again been ably assisted by WWOOF volunteers and here you see Ian constructing part of the new outdoor guest kitchen.

We have had increasing numbers of delightful guests who have intrepidly found this gem of a place to stay.

In the village local news and excitement included the re-opening of Pefko Kafenion, giving us another place to eat and drink nearby. Whilst the August "panieri" festivals were as busy, raucous and fabulous as ever.

In the mountains little has changed, and there are still many rarely used routes and tracks. Caroline made a fabulous 2 day trek from Sparta across the Taygetos Ridge to finish at Vorio, near Tseria.

Many of our guests enjoyed some excellent walks. Here special mention should go to Christoph from Munich for his one man ascent to the peak of Profitas Illias, and to Anna and Margaret from Bury, UK for their impressive ability to get enjoyably lost in the olive groves!
